IEC60079-14 Design, Selection and Erection

User need to identify the following before making any design, selection and erection of any anti explosion protection device.

  • Standard (ATEX, IECEx , NEC 500)

ATEX 2014/34/EU

   IECEx

NEC 500 & NEC 505

Hazardous Area Classification

Hazardous Area Classification (Zone, Gas Group, Temperature Class)

  • Hazardous Area classification is a method of analysing and classifying the environment where explosive gas atmospheres may occur so as to facilitate the proper selection and installation of equipment to be used safely in that environment.
  • Allows preparation of safety procedures for plant operation and maintenance.
  • The area classification process reduces the overall installation risk level through design improvement

How to Identify the Hazardous Area?

The following to be determine

  1. Identify of the release sources
  • Potential release sources: tank, pump, pipe or tank…
  • Flammable/combustible substance present
  • Flammable/combustible substance is released
  1. Determine the release level
  • Frequency and duration
  • Allowance for opening of process systems (for filter change etc. …)
  • Continuous release level

Release that occurs constantly or that is expected to occur for long periods.

  • Primary release level

Anticipated periodic or occasional release in normal operation.

  • Secondary release level

A release that is not anticipated in normal operation and that occurs only    rarely and briefly if it does occur at all.

  1. Determine the release rate
  • Frequency and duration
  • Allowance for opening of process systems (for filter change etc. …)

Gas Group

Temperature Class

Why Inspection is Important?

  • Electrical equipment in hazardous areas require more inspection and maintenance than equipment in non hazardous areas.
  • Lack of inspection and maintenance introduce the risk of explosion.
  • Where maintenance is subcontracted, they should be made aware of the rules.
  • Competency control should be in place.

Inspection Check List

Following any replacement, repair, modification or adjustment, the items concerned shall be inspected in accordance with the relevant items of the detailed column of tables 1, 2 and 3 of IEC 60079-17.
